Traffic is priority one when it comes making money and finding success as an internet marketer, it should be the driving force behind your online business. Several day’s ago I posted about how you can leverage current social marketing strategies to do just that, drive more traffic.

I also mentioned how you can easily leverage new tactics to get images incorporated into your Google search listings, this is a powerful method that get’s results – plain and simple. In today’s blog post I am going to share how Google has evolved it’s search listings over the years and how you can give Google exactly what it wants and also get the very thing that can bring success, more traffic.

You should know however, that this strategy is much more than a little image trick, it can and does improve a sites authority, it makes your search listings stand out and best, it’s free.

Google Search Engine Results Pages & SERP’s On Fire

Years ago, when I got started with SEO the Google SERP’S (search engine results pages) looked very different than what they look like today. When you went to Google and searched, you found “web page” results and that’s it, if you wanted video results, you would have to select “videos” from the left navigation and featured in the image below. The same was true for maps, images, news, blogs and more.

As you can see, their are no video listings, no images, no shopping results in the screen capture below, just standard web page listings.

However, in May of 2007 Google incorporated “universal search” understanding that users wanted the best results for their particular search, whether that meant serving up video results, news results, book results, blog results and more.

Another words, it was no longer necessary to select “video” in order to see video results, all results had been integrated together making the search process simple and straight forward.

Google is undertaking the most radical change to its search results ever, introducing a “Universal Search” system that will blend listings from its news, video, images, local and book search engines among those it gathers from crawling web pages.

The new system officially rolls out today for anyone using Google.com and searching in English. Not everyone will see it at first, but over the course of the next several days, Universal Search should be more, well, universal. A new navigational interface has also been unveiled for Google and is covered more in the companion piece to this article, Google’s New Navigational Links: An Illustrated Guide.

At the time this was a major change to how results were displayed and with each new major algorithm update, their were winners and losers. Some webmasters began seeing more traffic and others saw a drop, for example. If you had embraced video and YouTube over the previous months then this was a very good thing as your videos would now get more exposure.

It should also be noted that not all search results are created equal and this is where it get’s interesting for smart marketers like you and me. Standard web results are “text based” however many of the other listings including video, news, shopping, books and more include small graphic images.

Thus, when the search results are combined, some listings very much stand out more than others, they receive more “clicks” and traffic.

I will also mention that the video listed below has 6,600+ views and 14 likes, that is a lot of traffic and exposure, video is and has been very much part of my “success” formula since 2007.

My strategy back in the day was simple and effective, upload videos and that’s it. No crazy linking building schemes, no silly software, just create videos that offered value and the rest would take care of itself. The process worked crazy then and I continue to use this overly “it can’t be this simple” system five years later with much success.

Are You Making Video Work For You?

This is SERP’S on fire in action and it’s a simple and effective way to create traffic on demand, before we move on to more great tactics that you can leverage to get more traffic and I want to quickly mention that it has never been easier to create quality videos, with video apps for the ipad, free sites online that you can create slide shows and more.

If you were just thinking “but gosh …” I just don’t want to make videos”.

You may want to instead ask yourself “how I can” create videos that get this type of result, I create videos all the time with a $1.99 cent app called Doodle Cast. Sometimes I create silly little videos using GoAnimate, I have my assistant create videos for my various sites with Animoto.com

This was the first phase of how Google began to add more visual elements to some of the search results, I like to think of this as phase one … fire the laser (cheap reference to Dr. Evil). Google+ makes it possible to get your picture next to your search listings as well by using Google Authorship.

Here’s Aidan now with some insights on how you can further boost traffic with Schema and Google Plus.

Adding Creditability and Authority with Google Authorship

Google now makes it possible to put your mug-shot right next to your listing in its search results.

Apart from adding a sense of authority to your listing, it also dramatically increases your CTR (click through rate) which puts more visitors on your site, and more money in your pocket.

Check out the top 10 sites in Google for the search phrase “how to lose tummy fat fast”:

The website that stands out most and catches my attention more than any other, is in fact the website in position #8.

Why?

Because it’s the ONLY site in the top 10 that’s leveraging Google Authorship. It’s the only site with an author image next to its listing!

The good news is that anyone can get an image next to their listings…check out how Brian and I have done this for our websites:

Our websites stand out and we get more traffic and earn more money as a result. Google Authorship, like most things online, is just a matter of following a few simple steps – it doesn’t take long to implement and anyone can do it.

Here’s a brief overview of how to do it:

1. Get a Google+ Account

You can sign up for a Google Plus account at http://plus.google.com.

Once you’ve signed up, you’ll need to choose a photo you want to display and complete you profile information. Make sure you include a link from your Google Plus profile, to your website.

2. Link From Your Website to Your Google+ Account

Once you’ve completed step 1, you need to add a special snippet of Google code to each page you want your Authorship Image to appear next to. What this code does is verify that you are the person who wrote the content – it’s Google’s way of identifying you as the post author.

Once you’ve done this, you’ll need to wait several days (sometimes up to 2 weeks) for your image to appear next to your listings.

Schema Star Ratings

Another way you can stand out in the SERPs (search engine results pages) is to make use of “schema” and use Rating Stars.

Hardly anyone is making use of Rating Stars which means that right now, you have a massive opportunity.

BIG TIP: Rating Stars are especially useful on Affiliate Review Pages!!!

Check out the screenshot below which shows the top 10 ranked websites for the keyword “fat loss 4 idiots review”.

The 9th ranked website is the ONLY site making use of the rating stars. The 9th ranked website is getting way more than its “fair share” of the traffic.

But how can you add these rating stars to your website?

The site ranked #9 in the example above is using a WordPress plugin called “GD Star Rating”. The plugin makes it easy to add rating stars to your pages.

All you need to do is download the “GD Star Rating” plugin and activate it on the posts you want to use the stars on.

SERPs on Fire “Post Penguin”…

On the 24th of April, Google released its first “Penguin” update. Penguin was a significant change in Google’s algorithm and has resulted in millions of websites losing their rankings. Internet Marketers who aim for top rankings in Google have been hit the hardest, because they’re the people consciously trying to manipulate Google.

But what’s going on behind this Penguin Fallout and where is Google headed with all this?

The Penguin algorithm change was designed to look at 2 main things:

1. Optimization of anchor text in backlinks.

2. Relevancy of backlinks.

Let me now summarize each of these issues for you.

Optimization of Anchor Text in Backlinks

If you’re using any one anchor text for more than about 40-50% of your links – you’re in trouble. In the “Post Penguin World” you NEED to vary your anchor text more.

Let’s assume that you have a website about weight loss and you target a keyword such as “weight loss for women” on one of your pages. If you were to build 100 links to that page, you’d want to ensure that only 40 of those links used the keyword “weight loss for women” as the anchor text. The other 60 links should be as varied as possible.

Relevancy of Backlinks

Another focus of Google Penguin is the relevancy of your links…specifically, whether or not your links are on pages and websites related to your niche.

If almost all your links are on pages completely unrelated to your niche, then Google will likely discount those links. If you’ve got 15% or more of your links on related websites, then you’ll most likely be fine.

It’s important to note that the Google Penguin update was just released weeks ago, Brian and I are talking right now about further measures that should be taken to strengthen and improve rankings and also how to avoid getting slapped.

Be wary of those individuals and or products that guarantee results or promise methods that are Panda or Penguin proof,  nobody can guarantee results online any one that does has clear motivations.

    Thanks, Brian & Aidan! I’ve gone through the (quite complex) coding for Google authorship, and Google says it works, but after two months I still don’t see my profile pic. So that alone will be worth the webinar.
