I can attest to this myself, one of my authority sites took a hit and lots a fair amount of Google search traffic, this site is about a year and a half old and has hundreds of high quality unique articles, videos and images on the subject it hand. People like it as well, I know this based on the number of Facebook “likes”  … 40 to the homepage alone. However, I have some plans for the site and am confident it will return to previous traffic levels in the weeks and months to follow, however that is another blog post.

As often happens with Google updates, this sent many of my students into panic and fear mode, it is to be expected really. After all these are people that are brand new to the idea of “marketing online” and are looking for valid methods that can be leverage to make money online. With that in mind, I wanted to share yet one more guest blog post based on the success of one of my students Art Saborio who successfully launched a website that has earned as much as $2,000 in a signal month (based on the strategies taught in 300) and is currently on track to to make well over 5k this very month.

Over the weekend Art sent me several emails and mentioned:

“This month I am on track to make 5K for the month. Although Google took out one of my sites, they did not harm my sites. I am making double what I made in 2011. Last month I netted over $2000.00 for the month. On top of that I am doing a few other things. I am big on diversifying. I have an offline business and also a few other business I run beside affiliate marketing. Go big or go home…. Right?”

So before I turn this post over to Art, I want to mention several factors that I feel are pretty darn important.

  Publish a book and list your website within the book for yet one more traffic source, I will also mention that this traffic source is kind of special as it’s based on a buyer search engine.

Here’s the bottom line:

Your website is the center point or hub that all your marketing efforts and strategies that you leverage, if you offer something of value and you give your visitors the very thing(s) that they are wanting and searching for you will win, with or without Google.

Leverage social media, videos, your list, images, feeder sites and more to establish traffic and Google will simply be one more traffic source amount many that you leverage.

It all dependents on how you go about growing your business. About 44 years ago, I started to collect comic books with my Dad. I saved them and still have them. I own over three hundred of them and a few of them date back to 1968. My Dad passed away a while back and it took me many years to consider selling my comic book collection and moving past old memories. Yet I realized that when I detached myself from what was right in front of me, I was able to see the situation differently.

If I sold my comic book collection, I would not be selling my memories. Those would always stay with me forever. All I was doing was selling something that still had a lot of emotional value to me, but would be better served with someone who could actual enjoy the collection. The collection could live on and create more great memories, than sitting in my garage double sealed in plastic comic book bags and airtight containers. My time with the collection needed to come to an end so it could bring enjoyment to some other family.

The concept of what my comic book collection stood for would not change. It is only the people who are enjoying the collection who would change. In business this is also true. Brian is a great teacher. He teaches concepts and results that come through preforming certain techniques. The techniques work and people make money. Yet the marketing concepts are as old as mud. The concepts worked in the 1800’s just like they do now. And it is in that separation between conceptual understanding and techniques is where I and others have made a lot of money even without Google.

Instead of running away from the Panda, Penguin, Donkey, Chipmunk or any other creative algorithm branding Google comes up with, you can leverage Google, but at the same time ensure your success without Google. It is not hard to do when you first master the marketing concepts Brian is helping you understand and use.

It took me a little over a year to study under Brian and learn the foundation of marketing. And for those that want to take a shortcut, you will only find failure down that path.

How do I know this?

Because all those years ago when I first purchased Brian’s Commission Ritual I did not follow the techniques nor did I learn the foundation fully, I wanted to make money fast and failed.

It takes a serious commitment to succeed. And I knew that after my failures it was time to settle down and build a real business. I liked what I learned in Commission Ritual. Some say that Commission Ritual is outdated and I beg to differ. I agree that the techniques are outdated, but not the marketing concepts.

You can still find the same powerful marketing concepts that you will find in all of Brian’s products. What we pay for is not new concepts but the techniques to generate money in a market that is ever changing. So in 2009-2010 I sat down and started to look at where I want to be in five years. I looked at what I want to do with my life and how much money I needed to make to meet my goals. I have the same goals that I did in 2010.

3.    Care for my family

I consulted a friend who writes business plans and he helped me create mine. One of my business objectives was to find a mentor who I trusted and believed who could help me reach my personal goals in life and in business. This is an important concept that I believe in whole-heartedly. A person needs to align themselves with someone they can trust with all your heart and soul. It needs to be someone who can help a person reach both life and business goals. Happiness does not come from making a lot of money. All it does is make life more comfortable. A person needs to focus on both business and life to be successful.

From 2009 to 2010 I made about $500 in the last quarter of 2010.

Others made 20K – 30K, but for me making five hundred dollars made me feel great. Everyone moves forward in their own time and at their own pace. Many may take a few years to reach job ending income, while others take half that time. Yet if a person is patient, they will get to where they want to be. A terrible thing to do is to focus on other people’s successes. Focus on your own goals within your own business plan and you will guarantee your own success at your own pace.

After making five hundred dollars, I fired off a letter to Brian. I sent it to his office address. I wanted to thank him and to do my best to let him know I was serious and wanted to be his student. To me Brian had ROCKSTAR status. He was making a boatload of money, was hobnobbing with all the top marketers and probably did not have time to read a simple letter from some guy he knew nothing about. Yet I was confident his assistant would read it and would most likely give me some insight to when the next training session would begin.

But to my surprise, instead of getting a generic email back from Brian’s assistant, I got a phone call from Mr. Johnson himself. It lasted about 30 minutes and he asked me a lot of questions about my goals and why I did not join his Halloween Super Affiliate One-on-One Coaching Program?

You see I had bought the regular course without the one-on-one coaching.

I was very honest with Brian and told him I did not think I was ready back then for a one-on-one coaching program. I didn’t have my goals set and I did not have a clear direction on where I wanted to be in life. Yet at the time of the phone call, times had changed for me and I was ready for anything new that Brian had to offer and I let him know about my dedication, planning etc.

He told me he would be in touch and needed to jump off the call because he need to touch base with his new star student Mario and yes it is the same Mario who patrols the forum and takes no prisoners!

In 2011 I joined the original 300 Internet Marketer’s Coaching Course. It reinforced the concepts I learned over the years being a student of Brian and it helped me to implemented new marketing techniques. I made quite a bit of money with those techniques. I also joined Aidan’s program to compare and see if there was anything new I could learn, but to be honest the only success I had was with Brian. I did make money with Aidan but not at the same amounts as I did with Brian.

I asked myself why this was the case. Aidan was trust partner of Brian, but for some reason I did not have the same success as I did with 300 Internet Marketer’s and I chalk it up to one thing and one thing only. It is something that I teach in my videos and I will reinforce this concept here in this article. When words are placed on a piece of paper, something powerful happens. It becomes a reality in your brain, heart and soul. You manifest your own destiny by what is on that piece of paper.

When I put down in words Brian G. Johnson as the person who I believed could get me to where I wanted to be in life and in my business goals, going against that proved to be difficult. I am not saying that a person can’t change and update their business plan to incorporate other mentors, but in my case I did not do that and the results were mediocre. A business plan is the most important part of your business. It will make or break your efforts.

With 300 Internet Marketers I built a huge monster site full of WordPress concepts, video marketing and a ton of other stuff.

I had built a $2000 dollar a month business around this one website.

Brian always talks about going BIG, so I went big.

I diversified my traffic footprint. I spent about 80% using recommended back linking service techniques like Blogging Underground and SEO Blueprint along with other more natural linking techniques.

It was a fun ride.

Then… along came Google Panda and Penguin.

Too many, this was the end of online marketing, but in my eyes is was just a simple change in the market. I think people went a little overboard in their focus on Google. Remember I talked about techniques and concepts? The techniques are changing and this was no surprise; Brian had been talking about this for a long time.

He is a forecaster and a damn good one! For some of us, we like to milk the cow until it runs dry before moving on. For me I was still milking this same cow with Blogging Underground and SEO Blueprint, but also creating a more natural footprint. My newer websites built on the new techniques took no hit, but the larger authority site did take a traffic hit, but it was an expect one. What transpired was interesting.

The penguin update should have killed my website right? It was using Blogging Underground and SEO Blueprint and it should be nowhere to be seen on the Google index. And for the most part that is true. Google did slap my website and it got slapped hard, but I am still on track to make more money this month than last month. Why….??

It is because the concept did not go away just the technique. I built an authority site and people link to the website and come to visit the site without the help of Google. Even Google analytics does not show all the traffic sources I am using. Google does not recognize a lot of the java scripting techniques, HTML5, Python and other scripting languages that can be used to make some kickass sites. I can literally make a page that Google cannot understand, track nor index. This is the main reason why you will hear Brian talk about using WordPress and sticking with the program, because you can literally make yourself invisible to Google if you don’t follow directions.

In beginning it is good to leverage the power of Google. It is a great tool to get your business up and moving fast. It is great way to learn the concepts that Brian teaches and it is a great way to make tons of money. So stay focused until you have mastered Brian’s concepts. It is critical to your success. Brian’s concepts and forecasting was and still critical to my success. Success does not mean you abandon your mentor, it means you enjoy the success and keep on learning.

The Panda and Penguin update only strengthened my belief in Brian that marketing concepts are not determined by market changes. I built the site as a destination, authority website. I did not care about how much traffic a keyword was generating. I only did my best to ensure I was providing content that people wanted to read. I was hard hitting and I held nothing back. I did not care if Google liked what I was doing or not. All I cared about was my visitors and providing quality content. I was building an asset that I could keep, sell or do whatever I want with it. I ensured my success belonged to me and not to Google.

Websites still naturally link to me and it helps my PR. Although rankings are not important, link ad companies still promote it as a viable way to boost a page position. So they go out and search for websites that have a high PR and sell that leverage to their clients. So I get a lot of ad companies coming to me wanting to pay for a spot on one of my posts. I have over 230 posts and 50 pages, so there is room to accommodate the requests. This business comes to me, instead of me going to them. It is just one of the ways I make money that is not tied to Google.

One thing I started to work recently is writing books. It was something Brian had talked about as a way to avoid Google all together. So I started to write and to my surprise I really enjoyed writing. I am averaging over a hundred dollars a month on royalties. And I am going to continue down this path to build more residual income from Amazon. I also decided to create a website around that concept.

booksonlinepublishing.com is a site I created to house my books, promote them and also to help others publish books online. It is a work in progress and something that I am passionate about.

As you can see Google is not the end, it is a beginning. It is a tool that is taught by Brian along with the marketing conceptual foundation that often times guarantees success. If you look deeper beyond the techniques, you will learn marketing concepts that some people pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for through the Harvard School of Business. And you know what? The concepts Brian teaches are a whole lot more powerful that anything you can learn in a University because it is taught by someone who is doing it day in and day out.

Today I am on track to make $140,000 in 2012. I have used Brian’s concepts to build online businesses, an offline business and also to plan and build my newest business ventures for 2013. Not bad for someone who started out in 2009 with zero marketing knowledge and a dedication to learn through a $77 Brian G. Johnson product. I might not have jumped on the “job ending income bandwagon” as quickly as others, but persistence does pay off and I plan to be 100% off the corporate payroll very soon.

This is what Brian has done for me and I will always feel blessed and grateful for finding Brian all those years ago…

Aidan showed up at webinars, made use of the forum to get clarification when needed and also supported the efforts of others, above all Aidan took tremendous action and produced tangible assets, something that I believe far out weighs the alternative and often products tremendous results.

Today, in a post Google Penguin and Panda world, nothing is more important than going big and adding value, if your not doing this in your marketing, you will have a hard time achieving lasting results. But both Aidan and I have something that most wannabe super affiliates and internet marketers don’t, in fact I believe it is the secret sauce that separates those that have achieved massive success in business, work, college and in life and of course internet marketing.

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Aidan Booth, I’m a New Zealander who got started in internet marketing about 6 years ago and have been a full time internet marketer for the last 4 years.

My internet marketing success story started in 2006…like many people starting out, I was looking for an additional income stream, more freedom and flexibility and was easily excited by all the “too-good-to-be-true” sales letters promising quick and easy riches.

Instead of boring you with pages and pages of lessons learned over the last 6 years, I want to briefly walk you through how my internet marketing business evolved and point out a few critical forks in the road…things that were critical to my success and could have a big impact on yours.

It began in 2006…

2006 – 2007: Failure, Failure, Failure & More Failure.

My first year online was plagued with failure…

I can’t remember how many different products I purchased or how many different tactics I implemented, but after 12 months I had absolutely nothing to show for it. My first year as an internet marketer was an embarrassment – I was a massive flop and everything I’d done felt like a total waste of time.

I launched websites and expected them to make me money.

I purchased internet marketing products that “guaranteed” my success.

Perhaps you can relate…products made by internet marketing cowboys who only cared about making a quick buck.

I followed the dream and got sucked in time and time again.

Eventually enough was enough…I learned my first lesson the hard way:

If it sounds too good to be true…it probably is.

Year 2 was much better.

2008: I Discovered The Power Of Website Traffic.

After 12 months of failure after failure, I had picked up a few things along the way…firstly, that I needed to get visitors to my websites in order to have any chance of making money.

For the first 12 months all my websites were missing one critical ingredient…targeted traffic.

No one was visiting my websites.

No visitors = No money.

I started studying different ways to drive traffic to my websites.

Traffic Option 1: Paid Advertising

Paid advertising was the first option that jumped out at me.

In my quest for website visitors, I searched the net and finally found someone who could send me 10,000 visitors for $200…I thought this sounded pretty good and that if 10,000 people visited my site, then surely I’d make a few sales to cover the $200 invested.

I was excited by this new possibility and so I paid the man.

The traffic never came…I’d just been scammed and I lost $200 but had my first lesson beaten into me again. If it sounds too good to be true…it probably is.

My search for traffic continued.

I found the Google Adwords program. Google Adwords allows you to publish ads in Google and you pay Google each time someone clicks on your ads (PPC = Pay Per Click).

I purchased a course (sold on Clickbank) about how to run a PPC Campaign using Google Adwords…this course turned out to be one of the first quality products I’d purchased.

Within a few days of buying the course, I had my first campaign up and running and was FINALLY receiving visitors to my website.

The sales started to come so I decided to ramp up the system. I paid for more visitors.

Over the coming months my ads were shown to almost 13 million people and the sales flooded in.

I was finally living the internet marketing dream I’d read about so often on fancy sales pages. Most importantly, I proved to myself that internet marketing worked and in the process I learned another very important lesson:

Targeted Traffic + Relevant Offer = SALES

It didn’t last long though…after a few months of success, I woke up one morning to a message from Google saying that my account had been banned due to an infringement of their terms of use.

Adwords Account Banned - Failure

Basically Google didn’t like the kinds of websites I was sending traffic to (one page websites offering very little value).

I was back to square one, but this time things were different. I now knew without any doubt at all that the system worked…all I needed was a new source of traffic!

2009: Free Traffic From Google

A massive traffic source was at my finger tips but I’d always ignored it…I’m talking about getting top rankings in Google and FREE traffic.

I began to study SEO (search engine optimization).

I invested in several expensive online SEO courses and even went to a three-day seminar in a fancy Auckland hotel (I was living in Auckland, New Zealand, at the time).

I started implementing what I learned about “keyword density” (a big deal in the good ol’ days!) and “link building” (something totally new to me…) and sure enough, my websites started to move up the rankings and eventually got to #1 in Google.

My websites again had traffic and were making money…what’s more, I no longer had to pay Google thousands of dollars per week for my ads so my profit margins soared!!!

I’d successfully taped into free traffic and I knew my internet business (and my life) would never be the same again.

I Became A Full Time Internet Marketer

I quit my job, packed my bags, and bought a one-way ticket to Spain.

I was earning enough to get by but I wanted to grow my business…that’s when I started looking for someone who could help me take it to the next level.

Just when things seemed to be perfect, I got another BIG wake up call.

2010: I Lost 1000 Websites

Google changed the way it ranked websites.

Of my 1200 websites, Google de-indexed about 1000 of them from one day to the next. It was a massive change, nothing like it had been seen before and many people suffered – me included.

Thankfully I had a bit of diversity in my business and I still had a large number of profitable websites (about 200) – my earnings almost halved but I was still earning good money.

The types of websites that survived all had one thing in common…they were all useful websites that provided real value to their visitors.

I’d just learned another extremely important lesson that would re-shape the way I ran my online business:

2011 – 2012: Create Quality Websites For Long Term Success

My days of trying to “beat Google” were over.

Instead of looking for loopholes I decided to focus on creating high quality sites that offered something of value (usually information) to my visitors.

This simple principle is now responsible for a network of high value “Authority Sites” that earn me thousands of dollars every single week and allows me to live the lifestyle I’ve always dreamed of.

My road to success wasn’t easy. I’ve had more than my fair share of setbacks but it’s all been worth it.

When I look back and join the dots to where I am today, there were a few defining moments:

1. Realizing that targeted traffic was all I needed to make money online.

2. Realizing that loopholes only offer short-term results at best.

3. Realizing that creating quality websites almost always results in long-term success.

4. And perhaps most importantly, finding a good mentor and avoiding all the “too good to be true offers”.

Success Leaves Clues…

I want to leave you with one last thing today – and that’s to do with the “traits and characteristics” that were most important to my success…

If I had to pinpoint 3 traits that were critical to my success, they’d be the following:

1. An un-relenting belief that internet marketing works and that I could do it.
2. Never ever giving up – even when is seemed like it just wasn’t going to work.
3. Turning every failure and every mistake into a learning experience, and getting better all the time.

Stick with internet marketing, find a good mentor with a good system, believe in it, keep learning and keep getting better, and you will have success online.

Something To Consider: Super Niche(s)

Learn How To Do Internet Marketing & Make Money

Niche selection is critical, choose the right niche market (and keywords for that matter) and you can stumble, make all kinds of mistakes and yet you will still be able to get the results your after. However, if you choose the WRONG niche market, making money online will be akin to getting blood from a rock.

With that, go for the big niche markets with plenty of buyers, I see so many marketers spending hours and hours on niche research searching for the “holy grail” market and keyword. You know the one with lots of buyers, or a high Adwords CPC but few competing sites.

Marketers have searched for these types of keywords and marketers for years, I certainly did when started out and the chances of finding one and thin. Furthermore, so much time and energy is put into research, research so you can actually get started!

Think about it, by the time you find that golden keyword that will soon finance your new “internet marketing lifestyle” the real work begins with adding content, content and more content. Furthermore, if you do this for say a dozen or so potential sites you end up taking up far too many of your already limited resources when instead you could be getting down to the most important element in a successful money making business.

And again, that is the content, adding value and creating something that is web worthy.

So instead of focusing your efforts in trying to find the golden opportunity in a keyword, focus on creating that awesome content, whether that means videos, podcasts, text posts, graphics or comics … or what ever.

The sooner you get to creating that stuff that matters, the better positioned you will be online.

Yes, these are competitive, however wouldn’t you rather go into a niche where you know their is money to be made rather than spending all the time and energy of launching a site, creating content, promoting and so on.

If you generate stupid videos, videos that take you less than a minute to produce, video’s that offer no real value, then nobody will care and you won’t get the results that your after.

You will fail and hard.

And what sucks is that each and everyday I see the latest and greatest product that “guarantee” success, but in fact most of these produces shit content that is bound to fail. Thus, anyone using this stuff is also bound to fail and the cycle starts a new as folks wait for the next magic bullet email, please pass the pixie dust ….

It makes me want to smack my head against the wall.

On this very blog I have shared lots and lots of real business building tips and strategies, most of which are really not that hard to implement.

Actual stuff that I use to drive traffic and make money (proof below), stuff like video marketing (put yourself on camera – I dare you) and post to youtube, it works.

Back in January I sent out some emails and a few video blogs about my own personal marketing and why I was so fired up about Kindle, at that time, the idea of cashing in with ebooks on the Kindle platform was not a new idea. James Jones had been sharing his own excitement about Kindle for several years, however by January I sent up the white flag of surrender and gave into the idea.

What really moved me was sheer numbers of tablet users and the coverage outside of internet marketing, the kindle was beginning to hit critical mass. One staggering fact I mentioned was that the U.S. tablet market share had effectively doubled in 30 days. In December of 2011, 15% of US adults owned a tablet computer, however after the holiday’s that number grew to 29%.

By January 15th of this year, one in three US residents owned a tablet device and these are folks with credit cards who would be purchasing lots and lots of ebooks for their ipads, nook’s and of course kindle tablets.

But that was just one of the reasons why Kindle publishing looks so enticing to me.

Enter, Revenge of the Affiliate

Having been a full time internet marketer since 2003, I have levered just about every monetization method available, I have sold other people’s products as an affiliate. I have created my own products and sold those with success and I have earned well over $130,000.00 in the AdSense program.

All  of the methods for cashing in had lots of solid benefits, AdSense was super simple and could be added to nearly any site, covering any topic and over time my income from the Adsense program grew and grew. It was the perfect formula for making money years ago when I was starting out – simplicity won the day with Adsense.

Until they kicked me out.

Selling my own products has been a huge success and it’s a model that I will continue with, I love the idea of sharing my marketing methods and tactics with others and I get a lot of satisfaction out of watching achieve success based on the methods I have taught.

However, selling your own products presents a lot of issues that need to be tended to, such as customer support, driving enough traffic to make sales, forming successful jv partnerships, accepting payment and more. Selling your own products can be very lucrative, however it is not really residual as it takes constant work to maintain.

Affiliate marketing was the first method of making money that I began to focus on years ago, before I got started, I very much studied various methods and it really made sense.

• I didn’t have to have a product to sell.
• I didn’t have to worry about customer support.
• I didn’t  have to work any type of regular hours or be tied to any one product.

In my humble opinion, affiliate marketing is one of the best way’s to get started in internet marketing for the reasons listed above. Affiliate marketing allows you to focus 100% on the most important aspect of finding success online and that is …

Marketing

Far too many people focus on “non marketing” stuff like website design, visual ascetics, learning code, setting up servers and all this other garbage that actually separates them from the money they are so desperate to make.

When done right, affiliate marketing allows people to bypass much of that hassle and focus on the marketing, that’s why it’s called Internet Marketing and Affiliate Marketing …

However, like everything in life, affiliate marketing is not perfect and as it turns out, Google is not too fond of the whole idea, here is what Google mentions about affiliate marketing on their webmaster guidelines.

Unfortunately, I have had a number of high quality, 100% unique, written by my own hand websites that people loved that got slapped and deindexed, one day a site is making around $1,000 a month and the next, it’s game over.

Turns out affiliate marketing just like Adsense and product creation has it’s negatives, you see I have no problem at all creating sites that drive traffic from the search engines. However, if I am not selling product as an affiliate then I am monetizing with Adsense and both of these methods have the liabilities I have mentioned above.

Exactly Why I Am Moving Forward with Kindle

With kindle self publishing I can continue to do what I do best and that is create high ranking, quality websites that people love and I can monetize that traffic with my own products, however I don’t have to worry about the negative aspects of selling my own products like I have in the past.

• Amazon takes care of customer service
• Amazon takes care of accepting payment
• Amazon takes care of the technical details like
  shopping carts and product fulfillment

It get’s even better, no need to use affiliate links to promote products, I can link straight to the product page at Amazon.com and I am set. Furthermore, being a published author lends credibility to the various sites I create to drive traffic, now I know some of you may think … well your only self punished.

To that I say tom foolery …many people will see my book and think “expert” and If you think I am wrong …well, I guess time will tell 

Lastly, getting a book in Amazon is another source of traffic, more traffic .. more money

Facebook first introduced “timeline” in the late summer of 2011 to developers and has slowly been moving users from traditional profile pages to the new timeline design. Timeline offers additional features, larger pictures that can engage users quickly and a plethora of apps designed to leverage the new layout.
Now business owners can also take advantage of the new Timeline layout as well, as Facebook recently announced that “Pages” will be adopting the new Timeline feature starting at the end of March.
