I hope that you have by now come to realize that the surest way to attaining success as a publisher of Amazon eBooks is by using my Kindle 6-step method, which has been proven time and time again to be highly effective not only by me but also by many of my students. With that in mind, I wholeheartedly hope that your book is within a category that has moneymaking potential and that it is in a niche that has shown to have loads of buying activity. I also hope that you named your book in a way that will drive tons of traffic from Amazon as well as Google, that its cover is captivating and stands out from the crowd, and that its text and graphic contents is interesting and attractive enough to inspire viewers to open their wallets in order to purchase it. In other words, I hope yours is a product of quality and value.

Now that you are confident that it’s all done and you are ready to present it to the world, your book needs to be published at the platform which, by the way, is the world’s single largest online retailer. And to do that, you will need to sign up with KDP — Kindle Direct Publishing — because that is the only way you will ever be able to get any of your books to appear on the online shelves of the Amazon mega store.

Then I highly advise that you join their KDP Select program. No, it’s not mandatory but it is most advisable because this is where you will be able to schedule free promotional days for your book and that is hugely important to its ultimate success.

Once you register with KDP Select, you will be giving them exclusive rights to your book for a period of 90 days. In other words, you will not be allowed to publish and/or market your book on any other site or with any other vendor for the set period of time. If that’s something that turns you off, please let me dissuade you for the following reasons:

90 days is just 3 short months out of the long and productive life your book will have.
When it comes to self publishing, Amazon in the 900 pound guerrilla against whom no one can possible compete and win. Therefore, I don’t think that you will be missing out on anything greater by signing up for KDP Select.

Joining KDP Select will allow you to use the kind of powerful promotional strategies that you will find nowhere else — strategies that can help drive huge volumes of targeted traffic resulting in lots of sales, increase the number of reviews your book gets which can then lead to more future sales and, of course, make you more and more money.

In exchange of giving up the 90-day exclusivity to KDP Select, you will have a chance to schedule free promotional days for your book. You are right, those will not immediately bring in the big bucks but they will ultimately increase downloads which will then inspire Amazon to promote your book more earnestly and will potentially acquire you the book reviews which are so very important to the ultimate success of yours publication.

This is how the KDP Select free promo days work. Over the 90-day period, you will be allowed to give your book away at no cost to your customers during 5 days. You will be able to set it up in a way so that those 5 days are scheduled consecutively or one after the other, or you can spread them out as you see fit.

Having had sufficient experience with this system and having trialed it for many months with several of my books, here is how I recommend that you use the allotted 5 free promo days. First I need you to understand that with a brand new book, it is imperative that it gets noticed by the Amazon algorithm as soon as possible after its initial publish date. It is also very important to appreciate that Amazon views all downloads as being equal in value, whether they were for pay or for free. Needless to say, a free book will get downloaded by many more people than a book that costs money because everyone loves things that are free. Thus, with the hundreds or even thousands of downloads that will occur during the free promo days you set for your book, Amazon will be more inspired to do more of its own promotion because its algorithm will view your book as being worth the effort.

I use up all 5 of the allotted 5 promo days within the first 30 days of my books being live. The reason for that is due to the fact that while my book is still brand new and virtually unknown, it must still compete against many other books in its niche category. Customers don’t know or recognize it yet, nor is the Amazon algorithm aware of its existence. So I have to do whatever it takes to create a buzz.

By offering my book for free I ensure that it gets tons of downloads which in this case is equivalent to recognition by consumers as well as Amazon robots. Such positive recognition will then get Amazon to promote it even after it comes off the free promotional days and when Amazon promotes books (or any other products) to its huge database of customers, the magic happens — more people are motivated to buy and potentially leave reviews which then encourages even more people to buy and so on and on. And by now, the book carries a price tag which means that it will generate earnings for you.

Isn’t that terrific? Give your book away for free, set the stage for it getting the attention it deserves from human consumers and Amazon systems and start making good money shortly thereafter.

To be more specific about how I suggest that you schedule the free promotional days, please follow these steps:

Schedule the first 2 or 3 consecutive free promo days on the Wednesday and Thursday or the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday that comes immediately after you publish your book. Using these weekdays will give people enough time to download your book just before the weekend and weekends are when most people have the time to relax and do some reading.

I then like to schedule the remaining 2 or 3 free promo days about two or three weeks later and set them up for the same weekdays — Wednesday and Thursday or Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Follow my lead and you will potentially get an enormous number of free downloads which will lead to at least a small handful of reviews which will then lead to more and more downloads even after your book is no longer free and that is when you will start earning your book royalties.
