Does Social Media Impact Search Rankings?

Over the last several years social media sites (namely Facebook, Twitter and YouTube) have gained substantial traction on the web and millions upon millions of people spend considerable amounts of time browsing through them. With such a massive userbase of members, site owners have begun to implement social marketing strategies into their sites in order to increase visitors, to improve search engine rankings and to ultimately boost profitability. This brings us to the question at hand:

Do social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have an impact on search engine page rankings, especially Google?

I have my own personal opinion about these ranking factors which you will find below but I also invite you to jump in and share your views about ranking, social sites, as well as Likes and all those other goofy buttons.

Tipping Point – The Growth of a Successful Site

When it comes to online success, nothing matters more than high quality content. Sure, it is very possible to publish some rehashed rubbish based on PLR or scraped content that gains a bit of traction after blasting several hundred low quality links at it. In the end, however, these types of sites always face the same outcome — they lose ranking and become just one more substandard site in a sea of other inferior sites which nobody gives two cents about.

Conversely, when the core focus of websites is outstanding content which matters, visitors are attracted in masses with some of them returning for more and the power of authority combined with community ultimately occurs.

Social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter have turned billions of individuals into “button pushers.” This is a very good thing for webmasters who are striving to increase traffic of visitors, web rankings and, of course, earnings.

Here’s why ….

Social media sites make it incredibly easy to incorporate sharing buttons on websites and with so many eager button pushers (users of Facebook, Twitter, Etc.) around, one visitor can often turn into a handful and the cycle begins anew.

Using Facebook “pages,” site owners can easily create interactive mini sites right on Facebook and then direct visitors from Facebook back to a target website. Thus, Facebook pages provide added opportunities for site owners to get in front of massive numbers of people, especially in light of the fact that Facebook currently has over 50 Billion (with a “B”) users and many of them love to share and like good content.

The end result is a larger flow of visitors and more subscribers to websites. These subscribers usually return regularly to share their thoughts and opinions on relevant topics which is the making of a community and this is where things get really exciting.

As the subscriber base continues to grow and as those subscribers begin to participate more frequently, these sites gain more and more social likes and shares, content is published more often and the sites eventually achieve authority status.

Viral Effects Begin to Affect Rankings & the Cycle Continues

As sites attract an ever growing surge of visitors, the incredibly viral nature of social marketing begins to take effect which results in better search engine rankings and a steady stream of sustainable conversions.

Obviously, more people coming onto websites increases the chances of higher rankings because people often also:

– Link to sites
– Share sites
– Like sites
– Email friends about sites
– Tweet sites
– and so on and on and on …

In 2012, there should be no doubt in anyone’s mind that a successful social marketing plan will have a massive impact on search engine rankings, traffic and online profitability.

    Hi Brian,
     Personally I think it depends what you use it for I know there are 50 Billion facebook users  but how does it compare to number of Google search useres?
    Give me Google any day
